Police in Japan arrest five men connected with illegal upload of One Piece manga and translation

OP 2

Pirate manga pirates promptly pinched by prefectural police.

Manga mega-hit One Piece follows the adventures of protagonist Luffy and his crew of comrades as they sail the seas searching for treasure and staying one step ahead of the authorities. Maybe this group of five men should have taken notes on that last part, since they were recently arrested by the anti-cybercrime division of the Kyoto prefectural police.

One Piece runs in publisher Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, and every week new editions of the manga anthology have to be printed and shipped to distributors. As such, the magazines pass through a few people’s hands before they hit newsstands, and one such individual is 69-year-old Takehisa Hidaka, who lives in the city of Yashioshi in Saitama Prefecture and works for a shipping company.

In late October, Hidaka’s company received a shipment of copies of this year’s Volume 49 of Weekly Shonen Jump, which had an on-sale date of November 2. The company was then supposed to distribute these to other delivery companies, but police claim that Hidaka pilfered one copy and passed it off to a group of four unnamed Chinese men living in Japan.

Included in the issue was the 805th chapter of One Piece, and on October 29th, still four days ahead of when the issue was supposed to become available to the public, the chapter, with its text translated into English, was uploaded to mangapanda, a site that hosts unauthorized uploads of Japanese comics. Roughly two weeks later, on November 13, the police made their move and arrested Hidaka, along with the Chinese nationals, on charges of violating copyright law.

Hidaka has denied any part in copyright infringement, asserting “All I did was give them the magazine.” The police have not issued a statement regarding whether or not they believe any sort of monetary gain was a motivating factor in the alleged crimes.

Luffy himself has yet to comment on the matter, likely due to the difficult position he occupies as both aspiring king of the pirates and an anti-manga piracy spokescharacter.

Yo-kai watch what the western Yo-kai Watch doesn’t want you to yo-kai watch

With Yo-Kai Watch finally exported overseas, many await the inevitable changes due to localization and censorship that will occur. After all, if it can happen to Doraemon, it can happen to any series. Sure enough, the English version of Yo-kai Watch anime did not fail to disappoint.

The altered scene was posted on Twitter by WolfyMatt who thoughtfully provided a video showing the same scene in both its Japanese and English versions.

In the Japanese version a group of boys are watching a television program featuring a group of women in swimwear and cat accouterments. Being teenage boys who would be turned on by a mere exposed knee this was a great treat for them.

▼ JAPAN

However, thanks to meddling yo-kai the TV suddenly changes to a program featuring musclebound men exercising in skimpy underpants.

▼ JAPAN

You see, this would be the complete opposite of what the boys would want to see and it appeared startlingly quickly. As a viewer, such contradiction would trigger a response in the occipital lobe of the brain causing the us to either smirk or possibly even chuckle. Thus humor is achieved.

While the localization team certainly loves a good laugh as well, they were deeply concerned that young children might be confused to learn that people sometimes wear bathing suits. So, they decided to replace the girls’ attire with something more concealing…while going down a water slide.

▼ WESTERN

▼ JAPAN

▼ WESTERN

The presence of the men was apparently an even bigger challenge. So they decided to just get rid of them altogether and put a cooking show in their place. As a result, western viewers watch as the boys freak out when the television changes from images of reasonably dressed women to that of a chef. This causes the release of dopamine in their brains to stop which in turn makes them pick their nose in boredom.

▼ WESTERN

Granted the sacrificed joke wasn’t a gut-buster, but it’s quick gags like that which help to move the story along at a jaunty pace and keep people entertained.  On the other hand, hand-drawn images of muscular guys in skimpy clothes are clearly a threat to mental stability.  I should know, having grown up on this.

We test out a new way to make fried chicken, the Prison School way 【RocketKitchen】

kaki 1

If you’re looking for a new way to make karaage, or Japanese-style fried chicken, how about taking some inspiration from the underground student council vice president of hit manga/anime/TV drama Prison School? We liked how character Meiko Shiraki’s karaage, coated with kaki-no-tane rice crackers, looked in the manga and anime, so we decided to give it a shot!

The extremely voluptuous Meiko has also been well-endowed with talent in the kitchen. Even on paper, her dishes looked so interesting and delicious that we just had to give it a try ourselves. Throw out your old karaage recipe; it’s time for some kaki-no-tane Japanese fried chicken!

kaki 10

For those wondering what kaki-no-tane are, they’re a thin, crescent-shaped rice cracker coated with soy sauce and chili powder. Often packaged with peanuts (and called “kaki peanuts” or “kaki-pea”), the slightly spicy, crunchy little guys make for a great snack when drinking. But why devour them as snacks, when you can elevate them to a main course? The vice president says that when kaki-no-tane are used as a crust, it’s all the seasoning you will need.

Since we didn’t really have a recipe to follow, we looked at Chapter 42 of the manga and Episode 7 of the anime to get as close as possible to her recipe. Our ingredients were:

For five pieces of karaage
● Chicken: 300 grams (10.6 ounces)
● Eggs: 1 egg
● Flour: enough to coat the chicken
● Kaki no tane: 40 grams (1.4 ounces)

Instructions

1. Crush the kaki no tane into smaller pieces. Don’t pound them into a fine powder, but leave the pieces still large enough to give the coating texture.

kaki 3

2. Dredge the chicken in flour and then dip it in the beaten egg.

kaki 4

3. Coat the chicken with the crushed kaki-no-tane.

kaki 5

4. Fry or bake!

kaki 6

kaki 9

Karaage is traditionally fried in a pan of oil, but the kaki-no-tane burn easily, so you have to watch them very carefully. We recommend frying the chicken twice, the first time at 180° Celsius (about 350° Fahrenheit) for one minute, allowing them to rest for five minutes and then frying again at 160° Celsius (about 325° Fahrenheit) for 30 seconds. For those who’d like to avoid an oily mess, you can try baking them in the oven at 220° Celsius (about 430° Fahrenheit) for 20 minutes.

kaki 7

This simple dish is packed with flavor and has a satisfying balance between tender meat and crunchy coating. You can’t ask for anything more from fried chicken. Colonel Sanders’ combination of 11 herbs and spices be damned, all you need is this kaki-no-tane recipe from Prison School!

RA 12

If anime girls suddenly started appearing in reality, you’d probably expect them to first show up in Japan, right? But as this collection of fan art photo edits proves, they look equally at home in Russia, Portugal, and other parts of Europe.

Earlier this year, we took a look at a series of photos from significant moments in late 19th and early 20th century history with anime characters posing for the camera. However, it now look as though this phenomenon has continued into the modern era.

RA 10

RA 5

RA 1

Users of imageboard website 4chan recently started a thread asking contributors to “Post cute anime girls in places they are not usually seen.” Real-world Russia definitely qualifies, although we’re not quite sure why it’s become the go-to location for the fan art series.

RA 12

RA 2

RA 13

Maybe it has something to do with the country’s abundance of austere architecture, which looks like the sort of simple designs that could be easily produced for animation and helps keep the hand-drawn characters from looking out-of-place.

RA 16

This snowy scene also works well, since there aren’t any real people out braving the cold who would contrast jarringly with this Love Live! idol.

▼ Wait, you mean Maki Nishikino actually does go for walks in the real world? Maybe this kid was telling the truth after all!

RA 7

RA 4

RA 8

Some of the artists put impressive amounts of effort into adding environmental details, like the character’s shadows and reflections.

RA 6

RA 15

RA 20

The thread also contains no small number of anime girls lying or sitting on beds.

RA 19

RA 9

RA 18

But like with the deserted cityscapes, it seems like most of these bedtop backdrops were chosen because they make for a compact, contained environment to work with, and not just to be suggestive.

▼ With some exceptions — this is an exercise in otaku fantasy, after all.

AC 0

A ton of anime characters wear some sort of school or military uniform, but that doesn’t mean the shows’ art is always consistent.

For a hit manga, the original creator generally handles all of the main character artwork, but things are quite different with anime. In order to create the appearance of movement, anime characters require far more drawings than a single person can produce, and over the course of a series any number of artists may be involved in creating the necessary images.

Every series, even those that are adaptations of existing comics, has a character designer who’s responsible for establishing the models the rest of the animators base their work off of. Once the designs are set, a team of highly skilled key animators draws the frames that are considered the most important, and from there the work flows to lower-ranking in-between animators, who fill in the gaps between key animation frames by drawing the missing transitions from one pose to the next.

Even if everyone is drawing the same character and aiming for a consistent look, the different artists’ individual styles will occasionally bubble up to the surface, whether intentionally or not. For example, here’re six of the most popular characters from Dragon Ball Z, Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, Goten, and Trunks, as produced by nine different animators/animation directors, listed at the far left.

AC 21

Here’s a similar comparison for the 10 magical girls to bear the Sailor title in Sailor Moon.

AC 2

Some of these differences are no doubt the result of a series making it big and securing a bigger budget for later episodes, resulting in more polished artwork as the franchise goes on.

▼ The gradual evolution of Cardcaptor Sakura’s titular heroine

AC 3

Changing fashions and trends are also bound to be a factor in incremental art shifts when a series reaches the longevity of a Sailor Moon or Dragon Ball Z. But even for two drawings produced relatively close in time to one another, if you look close enough you can spot minor variations in the angle of a character’s chine, the curve of his eyelashes, or even the way light reflects in his eyes, all of which are the subtle calling cards of that particular artist.

▼ Mikoto from A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun

AC 4

▼ The Pokémon XY crew

AC 5

▼ The hard-bodied cast of swimming anime Free!

AC 6

▼ The soldiers of Mobile Suit Gundam 00

AC 11

Not surprisingly, anime aimed at younger kids, such as Yu-Gi-Oh!, show a lot of variation, as their audiences tend to be less critical of artwork going off-model.

AC 27

But even for the teams behind otaku-centric hits like Love Live!, K-On!, and the non-exclamation-point-accoutered Haruhi Suzumiya franchise don’t keep their character art entirely uniform.

AC 28

AC 9

AC 10

But for hard-core fans, these signature artwork quirks just give them one more version of their favorite character to love.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Millennium Puzzle forged from pure solid gold to go on display

At this year’s Jump Festa, which celebrates all things under the Shonen Jump manga umbrella, a truly remarkable piece will be exhibited: a Millennium Puzzle worth its weight in gold…because it is gold.

Attendees to the convention will bear witness to a replica of the Millennium Puzzle from the Yu-Gi-Oh! series. However, unlike other replicas this prism is made of solid gold, and was made to hype up the upcoming Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Side of Dimensions film.

“[Jump Festa 2016 News] At Makuhari Messe on 19 and 20 December, to commemorate the release of the upcoming Yu-Gi-Oh! movie, a pure gold Millennium Puzzle made by Chugai Mining will be exhibited.
Please visit! (Not for sale / Estimated value: 25,000,000 yen)”

Unfortunately, as we are clearly aware that this was crafted by Chugai Mining, the likelihood of it possessing the wearer with the spirit of an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh who is well-versed in collectible trading card games is about 0.000000058 percent (never say “never”).

Despite that minor setback, Yu-Gi-Oh! fans were both thrilled and intrigued by the announcement.

“Exhibition? Can’t sell or buy?!”
“Wow that takes me back. Shadow games were my favorite.”
“That price is too crazy.”
“I wonder how much that weighs.”
“I wonder if it’s actually a working puzzle.”
“If they made a brass Millennium Puzzle for around 8,000 yen I’d totally buy it.”
“I wonder how many people know why the price is 25,000,000 yen.”

The answer to that last pondering might even be hard for some fans to notice at first. In the Japanese number system 10,000 is a base unit called “man.” Therefore the price in Japanese would be 2,500 man. The number 2,500 has also been the ATK value for each protagonist’s signature card throughout the series.

If you want to catch a glimpse of the golden puzzle, just stop by Jump Festa ’16 this December. Unfortunately, it’s not for sale but if you happen to have another pure gold Millennium Item and a decent deck, they might be obliged to play you for it.

“We hear the cries of sushi”: Teaser for mysterious 3DCG anime Sushi Police released【Video】

pc_1280_1024

Since winning the Poster Award at the 2015 Cannes Film Market, people have been wondering what the heck CG anime Sushi Police is about. Now we know. Kind of.

This month, we finally got a look at a teaser trailer for the mysterious anime. It looks like it will be a series that will chronicle the adventures of three agents of the World Food-culture Conservation Organization tasked with policing the authenticity of Japanese food overseas. Meet leader Honda, data analyst Suzuki and android investigator Kawasaki, members of the WFCO 9th Division, otherwise known as the Sushi Police.

The teaser opens with a Japanese voice saying, “We hear the cries of sushi,” and closes with Honda declaring, “We will not abide bad sushi. Remember that.” Chilling.

According to the show’s website, the 9th Division is “notorious for their aggressive conduct and they hassle anyone serving unauthentic Japanese cuisine in the U.S., Russia, France, China, etc. They will resort to any means necessary to eliminate bad sushi.”

So, something like Lethal Weapon meets Gordon Ramsay in anime form?

On the website, other characters are briefly introduced, including Sarah, a predictably blond-haired, blue-eyed, big-busted food reporter. There’s also Carlos, the director of the WFCO, and Madam Fuji, his secretary. She also appears to be a cat.

Whatever the story, the look of the animation is certainly interesting and in addition to the release on TV channel Tokyo MX and a variety of Japanese streaming sites in January, the anime is scheduled to have a 4DX cinema release at 109 Cinemas, though it’s not yet clear what form this will take or when.

One Piece x Arita porcelain collaboration is colorful, fun and worthy of artistic display

OP 0

Once again, a popular anime has been turned into a work of traditional Japanese art — with vividly stunning results!

We’ve seen anime fused with traditional Japanese porcelain before, including the Gundam Kutani ware we reported on earlier this month. This time, mega-hit manga and anime One Piece has become a gorgeous Arita porcelain plate!

Arita porcelain, also known as Imari porcelain, is named after the town of Arita in Saga Prefecture on the southern island of Kyushu, where the ware is produced. The craft has four centuries of history, so you can be sure that plenty of tradition and skill has gone into the making of this plate.

OP 1

As you can see, the detailed illustration on the plate depicts the beginning of the “New World” arc of the One Piece series, a scene that should be familiar to fans. The somewhat ukiyoe-like style of the artwork matches the feel of the traditional porcelain quite well.

The plate, which features white porcelain decorated with red paint and traditional Arita glazes in colors such as blue, millet, and purple, plus even a bit of actual gold paint, is made by fine porcelain maker Koransha, which can trace back its origins to over 300 years ago.

▼ The back of the plate is decorated with the One Piece logo.

OP 2

▼ The familiar characters are brought to life with the vivid Arita colors! The clothes they’re wearing feature stylized versions of a traditional pattern known as kissho monyo, which depicts animals and objects  thought to bring good luck.

OP 4

The plate measures 28 centimeters (just over 11 inches) in diameter, and is available now for preorder on the Premium Bandai online shop at a price of 27,000 yen (US$220) for shipment in March next year. Yes, we know that’s a bit pricey for a plate, but it is Arita porcelain after all. Plus, 2016 also marks the 400th anniversary of the development of Arita porcelain, so it should make a nice commemorative item in that sense as well.

We always love it when pop culture is combined with traditional craft with such brilliant results, don’t you?

Solid gold Millennium Puzzle too expensive? How about a cookie version instead?!

That solid gold Millennium Puzzle may not be for sale, but fans of the popular card game anime franchise Yu-Gi-Oh! will probably enjoy this one more in the long-run—after all, it’s edible!

If you’re a Yu Gi Oh! fan then you’ll have recognized this straight away, but for those who don’t know much about the manga, anime, and tie-in trading card game, this is the Millennium Puzzle, a very important item in the YGO! universe. Way back at the beginning of the long-running series, main character Yugi solved the puzzle, releasing the spirit of an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh who would take over his body from time to time as the deep-voiced duel master Yami Yugi. Over the course of the series, Yugi and his friends would go through many trials, tribulations, and duels in order to help Yami Yugi regain his memories, facing off against other duelists wielding their own Millennium Items.

B3pFePECMAE534J

One Tumblr user has baked an incredibly detailed 3D replica of the puzzle that’s totally edible (if you can find a way to bite into the tricky pyramid shape). Unfortunately they didn’t include a recipe, but judging from the picture it seems to be made from four triangles and a square of standard biscuit carefully carved and embellished with the puzzle’s patterning, and all stuck together with chocolate cream.

We also know that the inside is hollow as they also included this clip of the cookie illuminated from the inside with a miniature light bulb to recreate the scenes from the anime where the powers of the puzzle are awakened.

We wholeheartedly approve of the idea of a chocolate-filled version, and are tempted to give it a go ourselves. While we doubt ours will turn out as well as the one in the photo, it seems like a simple enough concept that the chances of success aren’t too dismal.

madogatariexibition

Sad to see Puella Maji Madoka Magica end? Well, dry your eyes! A concept film unveiled last week has sparked speculation about possible new material!

A short concept film featuring a new Puella Magi Madoka Magica story was revealed last week as part of the ~Shaft 40th Anniversary~ MADOGATARI Exhibition in Akihabara, Tokyo, which kicked off on November 27.

Although the last official release of the award-winning series was in 2013 with Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part Three: Rebellion, plans were made to continue the series, and this movie could be the first of other additional new projects.

Most of the original cast, as well as series director Yukihiro Miyamoto, returned for the concept film’s production, with new music by Yuki Kajiura.

While the short caught many anime fans off-guard, reactions to other instances of “possible new material” have been mixed, with some fans feeling a little franchised out.

For those curious about viewing the concept film themselves, the exhibition will wrap up in Tokyo next week before moving to Osaka and then finally on to Sapporo. Each venue will also have tie-in items available for purchase.

Still hasn’t found an opponent worthy of his intense training.

Fallout 4 is one of this year’s biggest video games. Millions of people are living out their post-apocalyptic dreams in its hostile environment of a world ravaged by nuclear war. When playing, you can navigate through the story in almost any way you want, and what’s also great is that the game can be modified in unique ways. What’s a better way to live in a world ravaged by monsters and bad humans than with Saitama from One-Punch Man?

one punch 2

The popular Japanese web comic has spawned a manga and an anime that follows the story of Saitama, a “superhero” who defeats everyone he faces with a single punch. There is now a wonderful “mod” that turns your Fallout 4 character into the titular character from One-Punch Man, yellow suit, bald head, and all.  By pumping up the main character’s strength and stamina and increasing the melee damage, players can become a superhero in a desperate world.

The Ghost created a perfect montage of the Caped Baldy’s antics in Boston, capturing all the running, punching, and heroing you’d expect from Saitama.

▼ The only thing that appears to be missing is his cape, but there’s a mod for that too.

one punch 1

Although this makes your character in the game incredibly overpowered, if you are a One-Punch Man fan, you just might want to play through Fallout 4 with this mod. Food might be scarce and people might be starving, but we still need superheros like Saitama to give us hope, one powerful punch at a time.

Life imitating anime: Japanese people tell us about their most “anime” moments

14 Japanese volunteers tell us about moments in their lives that seemed to come straight out of an anime.

A lot of the situations that happen in anime, like people punching holes in each other and destroying planets with finger beams or whatever, can tend towards the fantastical.

But that doesn’t mean there isn’t at least a tiny possibility of some anime situations happening in real life. We’re certain, for example, the common trope of the “senpai” senior student confessing his love for an underclassman in an empty high school classroom has actually happened in real life. Bleeding profusely from the nose when the girl you like inadvertently does something flirty? Man, that would be a crazy coincidence but it’s still in the realm of possibility, we guess.

With that in mind, we asked 14 Japanese volunteers to tell us about their real-life moments that bore an uncanny resemblance to an anime scene.

First, we had our volunteers fill out this (frankly quite ridiculous chart) of anime tropes that they’ve actually experienced. The entries are as follows:

1)    Had a cute after-school club activity manager
2)    Rode to or from school tandem on a bike with your boyfriend/girlfriend
3)    The student council at your school decided on club activity budgets or otherwise had some kind of extreme authority
4)    Asked someone out/were asked out by someone in an empty classroom after school
5)    Ran to school with a breakfast pastry or toast hanging from your mouth because you were in a hurry
6)    Went to a school that allowed free access to the roof
7)    Saw something sexy/flirty and had blood shoot out of your nose

As you can see, in spite of the nosebleed phenomenon being a thing that doesn’t actually happen outside of an extreme cosmic coincidence, four of the people we interviewed (all women, oddly enough, despite the trope usually involving men) claim it’s happened to them. Perhaps they just leaned in a little too close to said sexy activity?

pp

Next, we asked all of our volunteers to give us the number one most anime-like moment they remember from their lives:

Male (20s)

“I was staying after school doing some student council work by myself when the girl I had a crush on came in. We’d already confessed our feelings for each other but it was a crazy coincidence that she’d be there at that specific time. We ended up talking about all kinds of stuff until it got dark outside. Man, high school was such an innocent time.”

Male (30s)

“When I was in middle school, I fell for a girl who had just transferred to my school. But one of her parents was always getting job transfers, so after a year she ended up moving to Hokkaido. It was just like an anime the way she just appeared one day and then left just as suddenly.”

Male (30s)

“There are lots of those scenes in action anime where the protagonist sprints up to a cliff, stops at the edge for just a second, then jumps off like it’s nothing. I actually did that in a way when I bungee jumped from the world’s second highest bungee spot.”

Not exactly the same, but we wanted to sneak a Ghost in the Shell reference in. Warning: Robot boobs and head explosions.

Male (30s)

“There was this girl I had always liked…but she was engaged. I ended up having to move without ever telling her my feelings. Around when I was preparing to move, I learned she’d had feelings for me, too, and had been talking with others about breaking off her engagement. The day before my move, we talked. I told her, ‘Go be happy. I’ll find happiness in my new town, too.’ Crying, she said, ‘I wanted to be the one to make you happy.’ Maybe she was just getting cold feet about her marriage, but it’s a memory I keep with me.”

Male (30s)

“When I was taking the college entrance exams, a girl who was hoping to get into the same college as me gave me an Ultraman good luck pendant (It said, ‘Nothing is impossible when Ultraman is with you.’). I’d hoped for us to start dating while we were at the college, but, unfortunately, she passed and I didn’t.”

Ultraman, look out behind you!

ultraman

Male (30s)

“I was at the water fountain during an after school club activity, when the club’s cutest girl invited me to a Christmas party. I was in the ping pong club at the time – the lamest of clubs – and I thought it was some kind of trap. I pretended I couldn’t hear her and walked away.”

Male (30s)

“Unfortunately, though I’ve seen a lot of anime, I don’t think I’ve ever had my own anime moment.” (cue waterfall of tears.)

Female (20s)

“I was washing dishes in my scary Home Ec. teacher’s class. As I was cleaning, I accidentally broke a dish, making a huge CRAASH noise throughout the class. My teacher looked up and demanded to know who shattered the dish. Out of nowhere, this guy – the class clown – timidly said, ‘It was me, sir.’ I was so thankful to him. I wish I could say we started dating after that, but I guess this episode wasn’t that anime.”

“There was a big group of us walking through the high school campus to class. This bird flew by and dropped a giant doo right on the head of this guy in front of me. All I could think was, ‘I’m glad it wasn’t me.'”

“I remember once, a friend and I were saying goodbye to each other on the usual path we walked home by after school. When she was out of sight, I turned around to start walking again and ran straight into an utility pole. Now that I think back on it, I really wish my nose had started bleeding. That would have been so anime!”

Female (20s)

“In middle school, our class president was always putting on a good face for teachers, but in reality, he was a brat. He was always skipping out on his responsibilities as class president.”

“In elementary school once, I finished up cafeteria lunch early so I could go wait in this little library we had for the boy I liked. When he came in, we just made awkward eyes and forced smiles at each other. I still get embarrassed when I think back on that.”

Female (30s)

“After my high school graduation ceremony, the senpai I’d always admired gave me his school uniform.”

Something like this

JapaneseJr.HighBoys

Female (30s)

“In high school, I was talking with my boyfriend at the time as we walked along a river [the quintessential anime scene]. We both looked up at the sky just in time to see a shooting star. We looked at each other and I knew we were thinking the same thing: We’re destined for each other. Things got complicated and we broke up seven years later.”

Female(30s)

“I went to a festival with a guy who wasn’t quite my boyfriend, but we were more than friends. After the festival finished and everyone was leaving, we got separated among all the people heading home. He reached back and blindly felt for my hand, and I grabbed his. After that, we just walked, hand-in-hand, for a while. At that moment, it felt like everyone else was foggy and far away and it was just the two of us, walking in slow motion. I guess it was the endorphins. It felt really anime.”

Female (30s)

“I coincidentally ran into the guy I liked at the water fountain. We ended up playfully splashing each other with water. It was the epitome of being young.”

Female

“Mine’s a secret.”

We don’t know what kind of anime that last lady is watching…

Anyway, what about you? What’s your real-life anime moment? Let us know in the comments!

Is that Eva Unit-01 in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?

The Evangelion marketing train (which, sometimes, is literally a train), has made multiple stops in the lingerie industry, with no fewer than eight bra and panty sets based on the characters from the influential anime franchise. But up next are two underwear options for members of the Y chromosome club, in the form of two designs of Evangelion boxer briefs.

A collaborative effort between men’s underwear manufacturer Betones and Radio Eva, the anime’s apparel merchandising arm, the boxer briefs are made from a 50-percent polyester, 40-percent nylon, and 10-percent polyurethane blend that the online Evangelion Store boasts is soft and sweat-absorbent. Both are priced at 3,024 yen (US$25) and can be ordered through the Evangelion Store (Unit-01 here, Unit-02 here) with delivery scheduled for early December.

Kitaro, NonNonBâ manga creator Shigeru Mizuki passes away

Prolific manga creator Shigeru Mizuki passed away on Monday morning in a Tokyo hospital. He was 93.

mizuki-header-imageThe Wall Street Journal reports that Mizuki fell and hit his head in his home on November 11, and had been hospitalized since then. He then died of heart failure at the hospital on Monday.

Mizuki had ended his latest manga, the autobiographical Watashi no Hibi (My Everyday), in May. Shogakukan had noted at the time that the reason for the abrupt end was not due to Mizuki’s health.

Mizuki was born in Osaka in 1922, and he grew up in Tottori Prefecture. He was drafted into the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II, where he injured — and later lost — his left arm. He penned multiple manga based on his experiences in World War II, such as Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths and Watashi no Hibi.

Mizuki was also famous for his manga about yōkai — Japanese supernatural creatures. His manga and research into yōkai is largely responsible for the popularity that yōkai stories have today. He recently starred in a documentary about yōkai that aired on Japanese television in September.

Mizuki was the first Japanese creator to win a major award at France’s Angoulême International Comics Festival when he won the Fauve d’Or: Prix du Meilleur Album in 2007 for NonNonBâ. He was also honored as a Person of Cultural Merit by the Japanese government in 2010.

North American publisher Drawn & Quarterly has released many of Mizuki’s works in English, such as NonNonBâ, Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths, and Showa: A History of Showa Japan (Comic Showa-Shi), the latter two of which were nominated for a Harvey Award in 2012 and 2014, respectively. Drawn & Quarterly also published a one-volume selection of Mizuki’s Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro series under the title Kitaro in 2013, and it plans to publish seven more volumes of the series. The company also published Mizuki’s biographical Hitler manga this month.

Mizuki’s Showa 1939-1944: A History of Japan and Showa 1944-1953: A History of Japan manga won the 2015 Will Eisner Comic Industry Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia in July.

Want to help save the anime world’s favorite colored pencils? Then take this survey

Hand-drawn art may be on the ropes, but it’s not quite dead yet.

For years, when anime and manga artists in Japan have needed a colored pencil, many of them reached for one made by Mitsubishi Pencil. There’s probably a bit of home-country favoritism in that choice, but thousands of satisfied customers can’t be totally wrong, and some studios have even made them the designated pencils that must be used in tasks such as checking and correcting animation sequences.

However, as the art production process, both professional and amateur, becomes an increasingly digital affair, there’s less and less money to be made producing and selling consumable art supplies, and so Mitsubishi recently announced that it will be almost entirely discontinuing its line of hard colored pencils, with red being the sole survivor in the spectrum. With so much brand loyalty built up, though, the news has come as a shock to those artists who have grown accustomed to, and are still using, Mitsubishi’s products. So strong is their preference for Mitsubishi’s hard colored pencils that trade group JaniCA, the Japan Animation Creators Association, is looking to make an appeal, on the behalf of anime and manga artists, that Mitsubishi continue their production.

First, though, JaniCA is trying to get a better picture of the market, and is currently carrying out a three-pronged survey asking for artists’ opinions. First, the organization is looking to see how many hard colored pencils artists use each month, and how many they’ll need to buy to make it through the end of March (which corresponds with the end of the business year in Japan).

HP 1

The above fields, from top to bottom, translate as:
● Company name (if applicable).
● Division/title (if applicable)
● Respondent’s name
● Hard colored pencils used each month (in units of 100-pencil boxes)
● Hard colored pencils used each month (in units of 12-packs)
● Hard colored pencils used each month (in units of single pencils)
● Predicted shortage of colored hard pencils through the end of March 2016 (in units of 100-pencil boxes)
● Predicted shortage of colored hard pencils through the end of March 2016 (in units of 12-packs)
● Predicted shortage of colored hard pencils through the end of March 2016 (in units of single pencils)
● Current stock of hard colored pencils, planned purchases of colored hard pencils

HP 2

The survey’s second portions asks for:
● Company name (if applicable).
● Division/title (if applicable)
● Respondent’s name
● What difficulties or problems, specifically, do you expect from Mitsubishi halting production of its hard colored pencils, and what has been your reason for using the company’s products until now?

HP 3

And finally:
● Company name (if applicable).
● Division/title (if applicable)
● Respondent’s name
● What other company’s pencils have you been considering as a replacements? What other products have you herd make suitable substitutes?

If the survey response is strong enough, JaniCA is ostensibly going to try to work with Mitsubishi to see that the pencils’ production continues, so if you’re a Mitsubishi-loving artist, go ahead and fill out the survey’s three parts, which can be found here, here, and here.

Student amused to find entry—and corresponding visual—for “cat ears” in his electronic dictionary

What happens when children contribute new entries to dictionaries? Cat ears happen, that’s what! Err, but maybe not the kind we were hoping for…

Japanese Twitter user @sand_stingray recently posted an entry from his electronic dictionary, which happens to define a rather unexpected term—nekomimi, otherwise known as “cat ears” in English!

▼ A quick Google search of the term nekomimi results in the following pictures.

Since the term nekomimi typically conjures up images of cute anime-style girls with adorable cat ears, we can imagine the surprise and perhaps shock that @sand_stingray must have felt when he saw the following explanatory illustration for cat ears in his electronic dictionary:

Whoah there! Not quite the anime-style babe with cat ears that we’re used to seeing. If anything, this lady seems to be in need of either a bit more shut-eye or a personal stylist…

Even better, another Twitter user decided to poke fun at the picture and subsequently designed a New Year’s greeting postcard with the cat-lady front and center:

Would you send this postcard to your nekomimi-loving friends? We think we’ll just stick with the more practical cat-ear headphones, thanks!

Gifu town under fire for using busty No-Rin character to boo(b)st tourism

norinposter

One city in Gifu is trying to put a little bounce into its local tourism by using Kocho, the top-heavy character from No-Rin, on its promotional media.

In November, Gifu Prefecture’s Minokamo Municipal Tourism Association began advertising a stamp rally (a stamp card campaign) open to visitors of participating bars and eateries in the area from November 7, 2015–January 31, 2016.

But what at first seemed like a fun event to support small businesses is now catching flack from residents and netizens alike for the association’s use of busty anime characters to promote it.

▼ Collect all the stamps! You haven’t already forgotten about the stamps, have you?

So why such a suggestive choice for their promotional poster? A large part of the reason, according to the association, is because the Kamo Agriculture School nearby was basis for the design of Tamo Agriculture School in the series, where No-Rin’s story takes place.

▼ Kamo Agriculture School, Minokamo City

kamoagrischool

As for the other part, it seems they’re trying to attract a certain demographic that may not normally display much interest in events like these.

While many users don’t necessarily mind the city’s ties to the anime itself, whose characters have appeared in a number of association-sponsored advertisements, a large number of users particularly objected to the sexual nature of the Kocho poster above, deeming it as “sexual harassment” or “unsuitable for families and children”.

The tourism association claims that the image was previously used by Gifu Prefecture’s Red Cross Center, where female employees were asked about how comfortable they were with the image beforehand. (Although the men were not asked for their opinion, we’re going to go out on a limb and say most probably voiced no objections, either.)

In the Red Cross’s case, after using the image they experienced an increase in blood donations from young adults, and no doubt Minokamo Municipal Tourism Association is trying to replicate the results.

Would you consider this a wise move or just plain silly? We’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter.
