A few years back, toymaker Bandai built a gigantic full-size statue of Japan’s most iconic giant robot, the original RX-78 Gundam. After bouncing around and being displayed in various stages of assembly, the 1:1 scale figure finally found a permanent home in front of the Diver City shopping and restaurant complex in Tokyo, assuring that fans can come see it whenever they like, and also that it’ll get regular maintenance.
We’re glad to see someone is looking out for Gundam in the nation’s capital, since apparently the years haven’t been as kind to this version of him in the Japanese countryside.
No, Gundam hasn’t retired from the military to take up soybean farming. The statue here was created as part of the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Fukushima City. That was in 2007, though, and Gundam is looking a little worse for wear after spending so much time outside in the elements.

The piece is the work of a local artist and steelworker, who unfortunately has since passed away. His creation still stands, though, as it valiantly refuses to succumb to the rust that attacks it like a villainous horde of Duchy of Zeon mobile suits.
Gundam’s advanced age is accented by his protruding jaw, which makes him look more than a little like an elderly man with an underbite.

Nevertheless, there’s an unmistakable aura of old-school toughness to the statue, which Internet commentators have branded with the scathing nickname of Hetare (lame) Gundam.
Don’t worry Gundam, we still think you’re cool, with your wisdom and life experiences. And even if it has been 35 years since your television debut, your recent trip to the ski slopes proves you’re still spry enough to maintain an active and enjoyable lifestyle.
